All 7th graders participate in “It’s a Girl’s Thing! / It’s a Guy’s Thing!” monthly on Tuesdays.

Social Issues and Jewish Identity – 7th grade

Get to know your classmates, high school students, teachers and rabbis better and in a deeper way as you explore what being Jewish means to you.
A few of the class experiences: 

  • caring for the elderly that includes a field trip to a residence for the elderly
  • a Jewish look at the Holocaust
  • teen issues and teen empowerment with Response, a Jewish teen resource, and our high school students
  • social issues and Jewish identity in movies – review and discuss movie scenes and create a trailer

Visual Arts Studio – 7th & 8th grade

Combine exploring different visual art media and interpreting Jewish themes in this studio setting. Expand your skills with different media and the creative process examining a Jewish theme while creating your own art.

Hebrew Prep for High School – 7th & 8th Grade

Thinking about taking Hebrew in high school? Want to get ready for that experience? Did you like Hebrew through Movement? Want to learn more about Israel through exploring its language? Join Orit Gordon to learn modern, conversational Hebrew through games, songs, videos, and celebrations. Class is open to any interested student regardless of their level. The class is well suited to those who were in 5th/6th Conversational Hebrew or those who liked Hebrew through Movement. Students will also will strengthen their Hebrew knowledge and skills by serving as Jr. Machoniks.

Once a month on Tuesdays, 7th and 8th graders come together to explore and talk about their Jewish selves. Girls will study in a program based on Moving Traditions’ national curriculum called “Rosh Hodesh: It’s a Girl’s Thing” with Rabbi Lisa Greene. Boys will participate in a similar gender appropriate program, “Shevat Achim: Brotherhood” led by Rabbi Ryan Daniels. **All 7th graders participate in this class regardless of their other class choices.

Jr. Machonik Opportunities for 7th Graders

Sundays, 9:00 am - 11:00 am, Wednesdays, 4:15 pm - 6:15 pm
Tuesday rotating with their other class assignment.

If your student likes working with younger students and learns best when teaching something to someone else, they can be a Jr. Machonik. 7th graders can help Dr. Goodman and the teachers by being a Jr. Machonik on Sundays or Wednesdays. Most of the help needed midweek is with Hebrew in 3rd or 4th grade classes or Individualized Instruction, as a tutor. Let us know when your 7th grader is available!

Selah – 6th & 12th grade

Rehearsals on Sundays, 10:00 am - 11:00 am in Perlman Sanctuary
Selah is a group of 6th – 12th graders who sing and/or play musical instruments and who work with Cantor David Goldstein and noted song leader and composer, Alan Goodis. Selah creates ensembles to lead worship and become comfortable with song leading. Folk, rock, jazz, etc. are all part of the program.

Selah members:
• Participate in the leading of Shabbat and High Holy Day Services
• Serve as machoniks, music mentors, to the 3rd & 4th grade Jr. Selah class  and the 5th & 6th grade Prayer Jamming Class
• Help lead Midweek Hebrew School services
Selah rehearses and leads services at our Intergenerational Shabbat Services on Friday nights from 5:15 pm – 7:15 pm (please see the calendar for specific dates,) and on the High Holy Days.
